Technical and Philosophical Aspects of this Web Page, as a Web Page
Where to begin this long and twisted tale? Well, first off, The Pepper Page is an almost purely narcisstic venture, an chance for me to publish something of my creation to a world-wide audience. At the same time, I know how gratifying it can be to find a really cool web page in the midst of a bunch of crap. I think my web page is pretty cool, and so I hope I provide the service of entertaining and hopefully edifying a few of the people who come here. I hope you will enjoy it as well.
Design Philosophy
- First off, I think web pages should be nice to look at. This does not mean that the pages have to be shockwave enhanced and have lots of pretty colors. Quite to the contrary, some of my favorite pages ever have been the old grey-with-black-text HTML 2.0 pages. Simplicity can be very attractive. What is just offensive is pages with horrible background images that make the text hard to read and bad HTML design that leaves frames half seen and just plain bad color schemes.
- Secondly, I think pages ought to be relativelty small in size. That is, try not to exceed 100k per page including images and plug-ins. Not everyone has Ethernet connections.
- No midi files!!!
- Avoid HTML editors. HTML is really easy to learn and gives you complete control over what you do.
- Content is good.
- This page was created using Microsoft Notepad running on a Packard Bell 75mghz Pentium named "Lamar".The RAM was upgraded to 24 megs and the original 14.4 modem/soundcard has been replaced with a 33.6 modem. I learned HTML mainly from Justin's Links From The Underground to which I won't link because it's really gone downhill since the Summer of '95 when I first learned about HTML. Netscape also used to have up nice pages fully describing all the tags in HTML 3.0 but those, too, seem to be gone. If you want to design your own page, I'd say just use your "View Source" command until you've figured the stuff out. Don't forget "control+c" is the copy command and there's no shame in stealing code, as long as it's good code. Note: There is shame in stealing images, unless you ask nicely.
